A harmless pathogen that's everywhere and never makes anyone sick unless they have a compromised immune system. Pneumocystis jiroveci, alternatively designated Pneumocystis carinii, remains an important opportunistic pathogen among immunocompromised patient populations in not only the setting of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), but also solid organ transplantation (1).
