Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
What’s New with TMS for Depression and Other Brain Diseases
|
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when other depression treatments haven't been effective.

The power of the magnet is one of the most basic powers in nature. We know that magnetism itself was an ingredient in the primordial soup from which the universe and our planet came forth. Magnetism is the force that keeps order in the galaxy, allowing stars and planets to spin at significant velocities. And in a sense, our own planet's magnetic field is responsible for protecting all
life on earth. This book is about how we can use the power of magnetism to optimize health. Today, we are at an exciting juncture in the evolution of health care as biomagnetic therapy fast becomes one of the most promising new therapeutic interventions. Actually,
biomagnetic therapy is not new to everyone. Many veterinarians have been aware of biomagnetic benefits for years, and use magnets to heal fractures quickly, thereby saving the lives of race horses and other animals. Doctors treating professional athletes commonly recommend magnets to speed up recovery from painful injuries. And other physicians in a variety of specialties, including dermatologists, internists, pediatricians, and surgeons, are seeing excellent results as well.

Franz Anton Mesmer, (born May 23, 1734, Iznang, Swabia [Germany]—died March 5, 1815, Meersburg, Swabia), German physician whose system of therapeutics, known as mesmerism, was the forerunner of the modern practice of hypnotism.
Mesmer’s dissertation at the University of Vienna (M.D., 1766), which borrowed heavily from the work of the British physician Richard Mead, suggested that the gravitational attraction of the planets affected human health by affecting an invisible fluid found in the human body and throughout nature. In 1775 Mesmer revised his theory of “animal gravitation” to one of “animal magnetism,” wherein the invisible fluid in the body acted according to the laws of magnetism. According to Mesmer, “animal magnetism” could be activated by any magnetized object and manipulated by any trained person. Disease was the result of “obstacles” in the fluid’s flow through the body, and these obstacles could be broken by “crises” (trance states often ending in delirium or convulsions) in order to restore the harmony of personal fluid flow. Mesmer devised various therapeutic treatments to achieve harmonious fluid flow, and in many of these treatments he was a forceful and rather dramatic personal participant. Promagnet.com

Do magnets have health benefits?Pulsed magnetic fields induce an electrical field, and have been used to treat fractures that are not healing properly. Transcranial magnetic stimulation has diagnostic and therapeutic uses, such as treating resistant depression. But the effects are due to the electrical field, not to magnetism.
Static magnets, on the other hand, have no health benefits.
Static magnets, on the other hand, have no health benefits.
- The Quackwatch article concludes:There is no scientific basis to conclude that small, static magnets can relieve pain or influence the course of any disease. In fact, many of today’s products produce no significant magnetic field at or beneath the skin’s surface.
- The NCCIH says:Magnets have not been proven to work for any health-related purpose.
- The FDA says:To date, the FDA has not cleared for marketing any magnets promoted for medical uses. Because these devices do not have marketing clearance, they are in violation of the law, and are subject to regulatory action. Action is taken on a case by case basis depending on the significance of the medical claims being made. Significant claims that are likely to trigger regulatory action include, but are not limited to, treatment of cancer, HIV, AIDS, asthma, arthritis, and rheumatism.
- The Wikipedia article says:Magnet therapy, magnetic therapy, or magnotherapy is a pseudoscientific alternative medicine practice involving the use of static magnetic fields. Practitioners claim that subjecting certain parts of the body to magnetostatic fields produced by permanent magnets has beneficial health effects. These physical and biological claims are unproven and no effects on health or healing have been established. Although hemoglobin, the blood protein that carries oxygen, is weakly diamagnetic (when oxygenated) or paramagnetic (when deoxygenated) the magnets used in magnetic therapy are many orders of magnitude too weak to have any measurable effect on blood flow.
- A systematic review of randomized trials of static magnets for reducing pain concluded “The evidence does not support the use of static magnets for pain relief.”
